Pants Categories We Produce

Six primary categories, each with pants-specific construction standards. GSM ranges reflect durability requirements for each use case.

Work / Utility Pants (280-400 GSM)

Industrial durability for demanding environments. Reinforced crotch seam with bar-tack stitching — the stress point where most work pants fail. Knee pocket access for insert pads. Tool loops and hammer loops. Box-bottom cargo pockets prevent sagging under weight. We recommend 320-380 GSM cotton duck with enzyme wash pre-treatment for minimal shrinkage.

Cargo Pants (260-320 GSM)

Ripstop cotton (260-300 GSM) balances tear resistance with comfort. Multi-pocket layouts require precise stitching — we use 20% smaller seam allowance on cargo pockets than standard, because most factories don’t account for the stress point where loaded pockets stretch after washing. D-ring attachments, adjustable waist tabs, knee reinforcement options.

Joggers / Sweatpants (280-360 GSM)

French terry fleece requires 48-hour resting period after cutting — this prevents leg twist that shows up after the first wash. Elastic waistbands need proper tension calculation: grip without leaving marks. We specify ankle cuff rib with added spandex for recovery. 300-340 GSM french terry provides optimal warmth-to-weight ratio for most markets.

Denim / Jeans (280-400 GSM)

Rigid denim starts at 320-400 GSM (12-16 oz). Stretch denim requires elastane content (1-5%) with modified seam construction to prevent blowout at stress points — we grade stretch patterns separately from rigid. Wash treatments (enzyme, acid, laser) require coordination between dyeing and finishing stages. We maintain wash consistency documentation across all production runs.

Casual / Chino Pants (180-260 GSM)

220-240 GSM cotton twill is the sweet spot — substantial enough to hold a crease but light enough for all-day comfort. Below 180 GSM, fabric becomes translucent on lighter colors. We apply wrinkle-resistant finishing during washing. Belt loops must align precisely with waistband seam placement — misalignment by even 5mm creates visible crookedness that buyers return products for.

Shorts (140-200 GSM)

Reinforced crotch seam mandatory for durability despite lighter fabric. Inseam lengths range from 5 inches (board shorts) to 9 inches (cargo shorts). Drawstring waists need channel stitching to prevent cord migration. Above 200 GSM, shorts become too hot for warm weather but may suit work shorts requiring durability.

How We Grade Sizes (Measurement Intervals)

Proper grading follows proportional scaling — not arbitrary percentage increases. A common factory mistake applies a flat 5% increase to all measurements per size, which produces impossible shapes at the extremes. Our process:

  1. Create base pattern in size Medium/32 waist with all measurements documented
  2. Define specific interval for each measurement point (not flat percentage)
  3. Grade interval: Waist +1″/size, Hip +2″/size, Thigh +1″/size, Inseam +1″/size, Knee +0.5″/size, Leg opening +0.25″/size
  4. Produce samples in all sizes, measure every point, compare to specification
  5. Allow +/- 1cm on body measurements, +/- 0.5cm on critical points (crotch seam, pocket placement)
  6. Adjust grade rules if any size falls outside tolerance
  7. Release approved patterns to production with measurement cards for QC

We recommend pre-shrunk fabric for 100% cotton orders. If pre-shrunk isn’t specified, expect 5-7% length shrinkage. Enzyme wash pre-treatment can reduce this to 3-4%.

Colorfastness Grades

Rated on AATCC gray scale (1-5, 5 = no change). Indigo denim naturally fades — this is a design feature, not a defect. We document expected fading rates for indigo products.
